The Mater Heart Run is one of the most recognised and noble annual event in the Kenyan Calendar. Kenyans from all walks of life come together to support the cause.

We call upon all our supporters to come out in large numbers as we strive to “touch many more children’s hearts”. We truly appreciate all the support we get from schools, corporates and other well-wishers.

Heart Surgeries

Our Journey So Far Has Helped

To date since 1996, more than 3,093 children have been treated either by surgery or interventional cardiac catheterization by the Mater Cardiac Program. The Mater Hospital first embraced the Paediatric Cardiac Program in 1994 after it relocated from Gertrude Gardens Children’s Hospital. A victory was scored by the Kenyan doctors in 1995 when they did their first ‘closed’ heart surgery. The Mater ‘open’ heart surgeries started in 1996. Dr. Christine Jowi, our present lead Paediatric Cardiologist, says “The program has grown from 20 open hearts annually to 200 cases a year”. The majority are Kenyan children; however children from Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Malawi and Zambia have also been treated.

2 year old Gerald is an only child. He was born with a hole in the large heart.
Gerald underwent successful open heart surgery on 16th June 2015. He had uneventful recovery and was discharged home in a stable condition. We are doing an outpatient follow up to monitor him.

Patients who were financially endowed had to go overseas for treatment. Large majority, many of them children, had no recourse to quality Medicare and were destined to a sickly life and premature death. ..
